Parang-ed the night away!
Los Pajaros had me in the dancing mood this past weekend for a beautiful Christmas event at Fregata Lounge in Mississauga where they played their rythmic soca-infused parang music.
For those who are not familiar with the term Parang, it is a form of popular folk music in Trinidad and Tabago.
Similar to traditional house-to-house caroling in Europe and North America, Trinidadian parang music is performed generally around Christmastime. Singers and instrumentalists would travel from house to house in communities, often joined by friends, neighbours, and family, and would play whatever instruments they had at hand. Popular parang instruments include guitars, maracas, claves, tambourines among other instruments. In exchange for the entertainment, performers are traditionally given food, and drinks such as sorrel, rum and Ponche Crema. These traditions still carry on today in some communities.
I am truly thankful to Terryanne and Glen Cassar of Los Pajaros for choosing me to document such a fantastic event. Keep spreading your musical magic! May you all join together and celebrate many more events for years to come.
Love Stacy, Happy Holidays!
